Argentine ants may be the most common ant in Southern California. They are small, dark colored, and about 3mm long. They invade our homes and businesses in search of food and water. They commonly “raid” areas overnight and can be found in large numbers in the sink, food cabinets, microwaves, dishwashers, trash cans, and anywhere else food and water is located. Outdoors, these ants get their food from honeydew, produced by soft scales, mealy bugs, and aphids. This liquid excrement contains sugars, and other nutrients. Other ants considered pests in California are; the odorous house ant, pharaoh ant, thief ant, red imported fire ant, velvety tree ant, and red & black harvester ants.
The Black Widow Spider is one of the most poisonous spiders in North America. Their venom is 15 times more potent than rattle snake venom. You usually find them in dark areas, such as around the base of your home, garage, in wood piles, rock walls, rodent holes, or in dog houses. Their egg sacs contain around 200-900 eggs. Small children and elderly are especially sensitive to the Black Widow’s venom. Other spiders considered pests in California are;the brown widow spider, the recluse spider, funnel weavers or grass spiders, orb weavers or garden spiders, two clawed hunting spiders, dwarf spiders, wolf spiders, lynx spiders, jumping spiders, and combfoot spiders.
Rodents (Rats & Mice)
Rodents such as rats and mice contaminate our food and living areas with their urine and feces. They carry diseases such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM), Plague, Rat-Bite Fever, and Salmonellosis. Rats chewing through wires are known to cause over 50,000 building fires per year with another 100,000 plus fires that are probably caused by rodents chewing through home wiring. Rodents will invade your home or building in search of shelter, food, water and warmth. Roof Rats can access your home by tree branches that touch your roof, and Norway Rats and Mice usually find access through small openings as small as a dime.
The German Cockroach is light brown in color, about a half inch long, and has two dark stripes on its head. They prefer food preparation areas, kitchens, and bathrooms because they favor warm, humid areas that are close to food and water. A single female and her offspring can produce over 30,000 individuals in a year. They contaminate food and eating utensils, destroy fabric and paper products, and leave stains and unpleasant odors to surfaces they contact. Other Cockroaches considered pests in California are; Brown Banded cockroach, Oriental cockroach, Smoky Brown cockroach and the American cockroach.
